Marshawn Lynch announces retirement during Super Bowl 50

Marshawn Lynch has announced his retirement by posting a picture on Twitter during last night's Super Bowl 50.

The running back had already been heavily linked with retirement after a season disrupted by injury and posted an imagine of his boots hanging up last night to indicate that this was the end  of the line.

The 29-year-old won one Super Bowl during his nine-year career when the Seattle Seahawks beat Denver Broncos two years ago.

Lynch began his career at the Buffalo Bills back in 2007, before switching to the Seahawks in 2010. He accrued 9,112 yards and 74 touchdowns in his career.

During their defeat to the New England Patriots during last year's Super Bowl, Lynch courted media attention after not being given the ball on the 1-yard line to drive over for what would have been the winning touchdown.

"When you look at me and you let me run that ball in... I'm the face of the nation" he said.

"The MVP of the Super Bowl is pretty much the face of the nation at that time. I don't know what went into that call."
