Shane Lowry has achieved his aim of seeing Ireland take on Scotland in their opening game of the World Cup on Sunday after a three-under-par round at the BMW Championship in Wentworth.
Lowry is currently tied 28 at Wentworth Golf Club after a round of 69 on Saturday. Had Lowry shot an over-par score he would have likely guaranteed an early morning tee off and missed the Ireland rugby match that kicks off at 8.45 am on Sunday.
Lowry, who is four-under for the tournament, admitted that once he was out of contention his target was to secure a low enough score to see the match on Sunday.
"I was thinking about that because, obviously, I am a huge sports fan. And, I love rugby its one of my favourite sports to watch.
"I was two-under for my last five to be able to do that, which was nice.
"I'll be cheering the lads on in the morning. Hopefully, I'll be able to watch it in the room and then come out here and shoot a good score."
Lowry also commented on the support he received from fellow Irish sports stars after his Open Championship win in July.
"It's been overwhelming the amount of messages you get from certain people. I'm a huge sports fan so a lot of these people would be huge idols of mine too.
"So, to be able to hang around in the same circles as some of those and become friendly enough with them to a certain extent was great."
The Offaly golfer added that after ensuring he could watch Sunday's match his new target at Wentworth was to "sneak a top 10 finish."
"I can't win this tournament so I'm just trying to get some form and confidence going into St. Andrew's next week," he said.
Meanwhile, Rory McIlroy is six-under for the tournament after shooting a seven-under 65 on Saturday.
