Kenny Egan says MMA is doomed to become an underground sport once Conor McGregor retires

Former boxer Kenny Egan predicts that MMA will become a minority sport again, once Conor McGregor retires.

The Olympic silver medalist previously hit out at the sport in 2013 when he made a Brokeback Mountain comparison with MMA following Conor McGregor's UFC debut.

And speaking at a Sporting Excellence conference in Breaffy House today, Egan reiterated his comments by predicting a drop in popularity for MMA once Conor McGregor officially steps away from the octagon.

Egan stated that the sport "will go back to where it belongs, underground" after Conor McGregor leaves the scene.

Conor McGregor suffered his first defeat since 2010 at UFC 196 but still managed to pick up a $1m purse. In addition to McGregor, Ireland have five other representatives on the UFC circuit.
