Is the Irish invasion of the UFC showing any signs of happening?

Conor McGregor has said many things over the years when it comes to promoting his fights.

But arguably his most memorable comment was his assertion that he and other Irish MMA fighters were "We're not here just to take part – we're here to take over!" after beating Diego Brandao at UFC Dublin back in 2014.

McGregor has gone on to claim the UFC Featherweight belt for himself, while Joseph Duffy has been named as one of 2015's Top 10 newcomers, although Irish fighters have not fared quite so well.

But how are the Irish group of fighters viewed Stateside and are there any signs of a take-over - other than McGregor?

Off The Ball were joined by Yahoo Sports' Kevin Iole to look at that question.

While McGregor's "world class" talent is now recognised and respected by UFC fans and commentators, that has not necessarily translated across to all his fellow Irish fighters yet.

"You go on the other and look at the rest of the fighters and they're looked at as promising fighters," said Iole.

"I don't think anyone else has separated themselves from the pack the way that Conor has. But I also don't think that people look and say 'hey, these guys can't fight'. I think they know that up and down the line that Team Rhino and SBG fighters are good and they can fight and they have to keep an eye on them because you know they come from those gyms and coming from where there's good fighters."

Iole also helped us preview Duffy's fight against Dustin Poirier in the lightweight division on January 2nd.

"I think he is a guy who could get in the mix. If he beats Dustin Poirier, then, hey, he's going to be in the mix for a Top 10 spot and once you get in the Top 10, you're not far away from fighting for the title," he said.
