In Pictures: The weird and wonderful moments of the Dublin Marathon

Record numbers turned out for the Dublin marathon this Bank Holiday Monday to take to the streets of Dublin and complete the grueling course. 

The race was won by Alemu Gemechu of Ethiopia in a time of 2:14:01, while Nataliya Lehonkova of Ukraine was the first woman over the finish line in a time of 2:30:00. 

Almost 11,000 Irish and 4,500 international competitors,hailing from 62 countries took part in this morning's Dublin Marathon.

The event, now in its 36th year, got underway at Fitzwilliam Square just before 9am. In total, 15,216 people registered for the race.

Road closures and traffic restrictions are in place in the city centre throughout the day, with Merrion Square closed to traffic until 9pm tonight.

Nataliya Lehonkova from Ukraine won the women's race, with a time of two hours and 31 minutes.

Patrick Monahan was the first wheelchair athlete over the line, while the first Irishman to cross, in a time of 2:19:47, was Sean Hehir. Pauline Curley, at the age of 46, claimed the national female championship.

15,000 athletes turned out to tackle the course, as they filled the streets of Dublin.

There were of course some others who were happy just to take part, and came turned out in weird and wonderful costumes for the occasion.

There were some recognisable faces on hand also to lend their support with a much-needed drink towards the finish line, or take part in the race for charity.

It was a fantastic effort from all involved to make it to the finish line today too, with supporters cheering them on and help coming in all shapes and sizes.
