Former FIA President thinks Fernando Alonso may not have survived crash 20 years ago

A crash similar to the one Fernando Alonso suffered last Sunday could have been fatal in another era according to former FIA President Max Mosley.

The two-time World Champion clipped the back of Esteban Gutierrez's car during the Australian Grand Prix before flipping numerous times into the crash barriers. Alonso somehow walked away from the crash unscathed.

Mosley told the Press Association that the improvements in safety in Formula 1 cars helped Alonso walk away from the Melbourne track. "“You wouldn’t know for sure without a detailed analysis but generally speaking those sorts of accidents resulted in serious injury or death."

“Happily that seems to have stopped. There are still freak accidents, like Jules (Bianchi's crash in 2014), but those sort of serious racing accidents, you do expect the driver to walk away. That wouldn’t have been the case 20 years ago."

Alonso gave praise to his team and the FIA after surviving the crash. "I am aware that today I spent some of the luck remaining in life, I want to thank @mclaren, the FIA for the safety on this cars."
