Ex-boxer Michael Watson speaks of deja vu after Nick Blakwell's induced coma

Former boxer Michael Watson says Nick Blackwell's induced coma has given him "deja vu".

Chris Eubank Junior's win in the 10th round on Saturday night put Blackwell in hospital.

Watson suffered brain damage after he was put in an induced coma himself following a fight with Eubank Senior in 1991.

"It was a real sense of deja vu as the story unfolded. I went down memory lane in many senses," he told The Telegraph.

"We, as boxers, step into the ring knowing there are risks. But it is the same for a racing car driver, the same for any other sport which involves hard contact. It is one of those things that can happen in sport and life.

"I went through a lot when it happened to me and it makes me feel happy that what I went through led to a change in the medical provision laid out for boxers."

It has also emerged the elder Eubank told his son to target Blackwell's body, not his head, at the end of the eighth round - and questioned why the referee hadn't stopped the fight earlier.
