'If Rory's on his A game he runs away with tournaments'

Listen to the full interview via the podcast

It's a bit of a cliché, but a week is a long time in sport.

At the start of the week, Rory McIlroy was being pilloried after his public split with Caroline Wozniacki.

But yesterday, a troubled week ended with a victory in the BMW PGA Championship and from an Irish perspective it was a one-two as Shane Lowry finished second and secured a place at the US PGA Championship.

"Overall he's got to be really pleased because he went in with no form," said European Ryder Cup Vice Captain Des Symth who joined us on the line.

"Rory, it was a wonderful win for him and it brought him up to sixth in the World Rankings. No one would've thought he could pull it off after what happened earlier in the week. He's got a lot of star quality."

Smyth would not be surprised if this weekend was a release for McIlroy after the recent troubles and felt that the Northern Irish golfer had been playing well all year.

Comparing him to the really special golfers, Smyth added: "If he hits his A game, he just runs away with a golf tournament which he's done on many occasions."

Smyth feels the upcoming US PGA at Pinehurst suits pitchers, which he feels gives both McIlroy and Lowry a chance to make a mark.

He also believes that Lowry's form usually picks up around this time of year. Des explained exactly what Lowry must do to try and snare a place in the Europe Ryder Cup team.
