US golfer Chad Campbell is the sixth PGA Tour player to test positive for COVID-19 as the tour heads into the fourth week of its restart.
Campbell, a four-time tour winner on the PGA Tour, missed the cut at the first tournament since the coronavirus shutdown ended at Colonial three weeks ago and had not played since.
He will now enter self-isolation as per tour guidelines and must be cleared medically before he can compete again.
Campbell said in a statement released by the PGA Tour today: "While the positive test result is unnerving, I am incredibly grateful to be asymptomatic and feel physically well and my thoughts are with anyone dealing with COVID, directly and indirectly."
The PGA Tour said in a statement that Campbell would have its full support.
This is significant as the tour's new policy states the $100,000 stipend available for players who test positive for COVID-19 can be withheld if it is determined the player didn't comply with protocols put in place.
"I support the Tour's protocol during this time and will be quarantining myself to protect others until I am well.”
"I am looking forward to competing again once it is deemed safe for me to make my return," said the 46-year-old.
On Monday, American Harris English tested positive and withdrew from the Rocket Mortgage Classic in Detroit. However, like Campbell, English did not play last week in Connecticut.
South African Dylan Frittelli is also in self-isolation after testing positive for the coronavirus before he was due to have flown Sunday on a PGA player charger to Detroit from the Travelers Championship.
PGA Tour pull-outs
Nick Watney was the first PGA Tour player to test positive since the restart at the Heritage tournament back on June 11th when the tour recommenced.
Fellow Americans Cameron Champ and Denny McCarthy tested positive last week at Connecticut, while Graeme McDowell and Brooks Koepka did not participate after discovering that two of their caddies also tested positive for COVID-19.
Koepka's brother Chase, and Webb Simpson, withdrew having been in proximity with a person who had subsequently tested positive.
Bud Cauley, who played with Denny McCarthy, but tested negative, pulled out as a precautionary measure.
It is also stated by the PGA Tour last Wednesday that three players on the developmental Korn Ferry Tour tested positive prior to this week’s TPC Colorado Championship.
