Billy Walsh plays down talk of return to Irish boxing's High Performance Unit

Billy Walsh has played down speculation that he could be returning to Irish boxing's High Performance Unit any time soon.

Following a disappointing Rio Olympics for the Irish boxers, the head coach's absence after taking a coaching role with the USA towards the end of 2015 has been discussed again as a potential factor.

Ireland did not win any boxing medals in Rio, despite winning four in 2012 including gold for Katie Taylor when Walsh oversaw the boxing High Performance Unit.

"I’d sit down and talk to anybody but at the moment there isn’t anything there and I’m quite happy where I am and that’s where my foreseeable future is," he said to South East Radio.

Walsh added that he would be willing to listen to any offers but insists that there has been no approach from the Irish Institute of Sport or the IABA.

He also added that he would be more than happy to remain in his current role with the USA with the Tokyo Olympics on the horizon in 2020.

"I have a mission. I want to try and make the USA one of the best teams in the world and I want to try and do that by Tokyo, and that’s where my focus is at the moment," he said.

Former amateur boxer Jason Quigley, who has since turned pro, highlighted an ability to maintain discipline as one of Walsh's key attributes.

"The main place [Billy's] missed is with the control and the discipline," he said earlier this month.
