Why Kalvin Phillips is the right fit for Manchester United | John Giles

It will be difficult for Leeds United to hang on to Kalvin Phillips if Manchester United come knocking, according to United and Leeds legend John Giles.

It will be difficult for Leeds United to hang on to Kalvin Phillips if Manchester United come knocking, according to United and Leeds legend John Giles.

There are currently many issues in the Manchester United dressing room, not least of which is the reported attitude in the camp at Old Trafford.

However, one of the main issues that Erik Ten Hag will be looking to fix when he begins his tenure at the storied club is their troublesome personnel.

At the same time, Kalvin Phillips has been the best thing at Leeds United all season, and many believe that he is destined for greater things. This is why the pair have been heavily linked for a summer transfer.

Speaking on Off The Ball on Thursday, Giles revealed why he thinks it would be the right move for both parties.

"I think he'd do well there," Giles said.  "I wouldn't say he's the complete midfield player, but I think he could do a job. He's a very energetic lad.

"He is not going to dictate play in the midfield. He will win tackles, he can distribute it okay. I think he would be a good player for Manchester United in the position that United are in at the moment."

Giles feels that the only thing standing in the way of the move, as it is in most transfers, is the money.

"I'd have no doubt that, if the fee is right, Leeds would let him go," Giles said. "It's Leeds. They are not a club that are going to be buying players.

"They haven't done it in the last few years, anyway. I can't remember the last time they bought someone. If the offer was good enough, I think they'd let him go."
