'He'd have knocked my f***ing head off' | Gascoigne's prank on Andy Goram after goal

Paul Gascoigne has told of how he wound up Rangers teammate Andy Goram after he scored the goal that sealed his England cult status.

Gascoigne flicked the ball over the head of Colin Hendry to beat Goram in the Rangers net, as England would go on to win 2-1 win in their Euro 96 group.

"I daren't look at him after I finished celebrating because I knew he'd be fuming and he would probably have knocked my f***ing head off!" Gascoigne told The Sun of his celebration after beating Goram in the Scotland goal.

"It made me a bit anxious about going back to Rangers after but I decided, 'F*** - I'll wind them up anyway when I get back.'"

Gascoigne took matters into his own hands when he returned to Ibrox later that summer.

"So when I rejoined the team in the dressing room, I stuck pictures of the goal on the walls," he recalled.

"Then I got a mop which looked like Colin Hendry's head, flicked a ball over it and volleyed it straight at Andy.

"He went off his f***ing head and had to be held off me. He said, 'If you ever do that again, I'll knock you out.'"

Klinsmann on Gascoigne

It wasn't just the England fans that lost their minds when Gascoigne scored the goal.

"We all watched that game," Jurgen Klinsmann explained to the Daily Mail of the German team sitting down to watch England's Euro '96 clash with Scotland.

"We were just freaking out when Gascoigne scored that goal. Wow. Honestly, there is no German player who is not a fan of Gazza.

"Then the celebration when Teddy (Sheringham) is squeezing the water bottle, it was fantastic. But that game, England versus Scotland, it is one of the most intense experiences you can have as a neutral.

"It's like the Boca Juniors-River Plate derby. I went to that game and thought, "I might never get out of this stadium!". The whole place was shaking.

"And then you have Paul Gascoigne on the field, that just takes it to another level… another level."
