Last year's league winners opened their campaign with a victory over All-Ireland winners, Kilkenny, at Walsh Park in Waterford. While conditions were poor, Waterford came away with a four point victory and Austin Gleeson was happy with the victory.
Despite the fact that Brian Cody's Kilkenny are only back training a few weeks, Gleeson is aware of how important any win over Kilkenny is.
Speaking to Off The Ball's Oisin Langan after the game, Waterford's centre-back, Gleeson was coy over talk of being a defensive team and believes that their game plan involves working hard from one to 15.
Brian Cody believes the better team won and understands that his side can't just click their fingers and start winning matches. There is work to be done in Kilkenny but Cody is not too concerned, despite losing today and seeing one of his players sent off in the closing stages Colin Fennelly sent off in the closing stages.
"Look, it was our first game, we had no game of any kind in preparation for it, we had no challenge match we had no Walsh Cup match, we had nothing at all and match fitness doesn't just happen straight away. We lost by four points, but we could have lost by more".
Cody was calm and collected after the loss and understandably so, but All-Ireland winning former Kilkenny goalkeeper Michael Walsh believes that Kilkenny will be upset with the manner in which they were beaten and dominated throughout.
"Waterford really dominated that game from start to finish we felt at have time with the breeze advantage in the second half and get some sort of domination, but it wasn't to be".
