Tommy Walsh leaves the Kerry panel

Kerry star Tommy Walsh has left the Kerry senior panel after failing to break his way into the starting team.

The 28-year-old made his Championship debut for Kerry in 2008, when he helped the side to the Munster title. He was also the Young Footballer of the Year that season as his side lost in the All-Ireland final.

2009 saw Walsh win his sole All-Ireland title as Kerry defeated Cork in the final. The Tralee native scored four points in the final.

That was to be Walsh's last game for his county for over five years as he joined the AFL team St. Kilda at the end of 2009. Two years later he joined the Sydney Swans before retuning home to Ireland at the end of the 2014 season.

Walsh re-joined the Kerry squad in 2015, and failed to feature as much as he had hoped. The Kerins O'Rahilly star was an unused sub in the All-Ireland Final defeat to Dublin last September.

The Irish Examiner reported on Thursday morning, that Walsh was to leave the squad after failing to cement a starting place during Kerry's run to the Allianz League Final last Sunday. Once again, Walsh was left on the bench as Kerry lost to Dublin.

Tony Leen, sports editor with The Examiner confirmed the news on Thursday afternoon, in what will come as a blow to Kerry's Munster and All-Ireland hopes.

Kerry begin their Munster Championship campaign against either Limerick or Clare on the second weekend in June.
