'If Tommy Maher had not come along in 1957, where would Kilkenny be now?'

Yesterday, as one of the greatest hurlers of them all retired, one of the all-time best managers passed away.

Fr Tommy Maher died aged 92, leaving a legacy of seven All-Ireland titles for Kilkenny as the senior county chief from the 1950s to the '70s.

Tonight on Off The Ball, we were joined on the line by his biographer Enda McEvoy to talk about Maher's position as the "Godfather of modern hurling".

As McEvoy explained, Maher took charge of the Cats at a lean period for their inter-county fortunes, having won just a single All-Ireland since 1939.

"If Tommy Maher had not come along in 1957, where would Kilkenny be now?" he said, adding that the Cats might not have enjoyed later success without Maher's achievements.
