Monaghan advanced to the Ulster Football Final yesterday afternoon after a ten point over Fermanagh to reach their third provincial final in a row. The result came five days after Thomas Connolly was given a two year ban for the use of steroids.
Connolly was a member of the Monaghan squad during the Dr. McKenna Cup and early stages of the National League. He is the first GAA player to be ever given a drugs ban.
Speaking after yesterday's win over Fermanagh, Monaghan boss Malachy O'Rourke spoke to Oisin Langan about the ban. O'Rourke spoke about a need for players to be educated by the GAA about what is banned. "Thomas got absolutely no education in regards to what he could take and couldnt take."
"Everybody in the GAA is under the same umbrella. Anybody can be tested" according to O'Rourke. He added that players of all levels "are not educated enough to know everything in this area" and it will have to be looked at by the GAA to prevent another scenario like that one that befell Thomas Connolly.
