Sligo poised for Spillane boost

Pat Spillane Junior is set to join the Sligo senior football panel, according to reports.

The Kerry native - who is son of Kingdom great Pat - is believed to be keen on representing the Yeats County.

The Irish Independent reports that the 24-year-old has held discussions with Tony McEntee, but has yet to train with the squad.

Spillane is eligible to represent Sligo through his mother, Rosarii, who hails from the county.

He has never represented Kerry at senior level, though his performances with St Jude's last season saw him shoot to prominence.

Spillane was to the fore in their run to the Dublin Senior Championship final, where they lost out to Kilmacud Crokes.

He has also played for his home club, Templenoe.

Spillane's potential addition to the Sligo squad will come as a major boost to the county.

Tony McEntee's first year in charge returned just one win from their five matches in a condensed campaign.

After failing to escape Division Four, the Yeats County then suffered a hefty defeat to Mayo in the Connacht Championship.

However, now into his second year, Sligo and McEntee will aim to attain promotion from Division Four this term.

There were plenty of positives last night for the county in a 1-21 to 1-17 win over Leitrim in the Connacht GAA indoor dome at Bekan.

Niall Murphy fired 1-10 for the winners, who will play Roscommon in the semi-final on Saturday.

They'll begin their campaign in Division Four of the Allianz League away to Wexford at the end of January.

A trip to New York awaits for Sligo's first foray into this year's Connacht Championship in April.
