Roscommon look to get out of "holiday mode" this weekend against Leitrim

Roscommon avoided an embarassing defeat to New York in the opening round of the Connacht senior football championship in the Bronx, a one-point margin enough to see them through to the next round.

Such a result is not one a team with ambitions of competing for a provincial title aims to get, but Liam McHale says it will act as a timely wake-up call for the county.

"It was a shock, they definitely deserved a draw there and they had the opportunity to get that. Having said that, when we looked at the tape the next day and analysed it a little bit we missed six one-on-ones with the keeper.

"He got man of the match which tells its own story and we kicked 13 wides, six or seven of those were bad wides. The thing that concerns me most is that New York scored 17 points. We played against some of the top teams in the country and some of the top forwards in the league playing well and we didn't concede that much.

"Whilst we won by a point, I think that we really need to improve defensively as a unit, more than any other aspect of our game."
