Mayo were the victors at Dr. Hyde Park this afternoon, but the overbearing emotion was that of Roscommon regret.
Last year’s All-Ireland finalists came from 3 points behind in a tight Connacht semi-final to win by the narrowest of margins, and that was only secured after James Horan’s side weathered a stoppage time Roscommon attack that fell just short of forcing a replay.
The game started slowly, with just 7 points scored in the first half and Mayo leading by four points to three at the break.
That pedestrian pace was eliminated early in the second half when Roscommon’s Ciaran Cafferkey scored the game’s only goal.
Mayo responded with two points from substitute Andy Moran and late scores from Cillian O’Connor and Kevin McLoughlin.
Despite a late Roscommon charge those scores proved key as Horan’s men marched on to the Connacht final witha 1 point win, 0-13 to 1-9. Mayo will now look to take their fourth consecutive provincial title when they face either Sligo or Galway in July’s final.
The opening game of a double header at Croke Park this afternoon saw Kildare coast into the Leinster Semi-Final.
They thrashed Louth by 1-22 to 1-7, with Cathal McNally netting for Kildare.
They will now face either Meath or Carlow in the semi final.
