Roscommon squeezed past New York by a single point in the Bronx last night after pushing the visitors to the limit in the opening game of this year's All Ireland Football Championship.
The opening game of this year's football championship has been under increased scrutiny with news that Johnny Glynn had declared for New York and would miss out on hurling for Galway this summer.
Glynn said, in an interview during the week, that "Lads might talk down New York but to be honest the talent here is unbelievable."
He continued, "there are lads here in New York that would make any team at home. Whether we can beat Roscommon or not, I don’t know, but we’ll give them 70 minutes of the best football we can give them.”
Glynn's hypothesis was put to the test yesterday and his New York side certainly gave Roscommon all they could handle for 70 minutes.
Roscommon, a side who had lost out on a Division 1 final recently having been beaten by Dublin, were put to the test and escaped with the narrowest of victories as Kevin McStay handed debuts to Sean Mullooly, Niall Mc Inerney, Cathal Compton, Cian Connolly and John McManus.
The game, watched by a crowd of 2,500, ended 1-15 to 0-17 in favour of the travelling Rossies but it will give Kevin McStay plenty to consider as they make their way back across the Atlantic as they prepare to play Leitrim in a Connacht quarter-final.
