Mossy Quinn: Why reaching league knockout rounds is vital for Dublin

Ex-Dublin forward Mossy Quinn believes it is vital for his countymen to reach the Allianz National Football League knockout stages because of the make-up of the GAA calendar.

Mossy was on Off The Ball today ahead of the Dubs' match with Derry as the league approaches its conclusion.

"Next Sunday is meant to be the last round of the normal stages of the league. So if Dublin weren't to qualify, they'd go from having no game from April 7th to May 31st and if they win that [latter championship] game, they've a full month to wait. So if they finished up next Sunday, they're looking at one competitive game for two months which isn't ideal for the time of year," he said.

"So if you can add a league semi-final and a final into the schedule, then it obviously puts them in a stronger position."

Meanwhile, he has also noted that their has been a couple of tweaks defensively in the way Dublin are defending this year.

"I think it's having a sense of an insurance policy to cover at the back. Denis Bastick's played a lot of league games. His natural instinct is to sit back and you saw that against Mayo. The wing backs are still going and there's no change in mindset from those guys but maybe there's one or two other guys out on the pitch who are saying 'maybe they're all gone, so I'm going to sit and not leave the full-back line exposed. That seems to be the learning from it," said Mossy."
