Enda McGinley: Donegal's forwards are closest to threatening Dubs

Former Tyrone player Enda McGinley was on Monday’s OTB AM and said that Donegal's forwards are the best equipped of any county to dethrone Dublin in the All-Ireland.

Donegal were impressive in their victory over Cavan in Sunday’s Ulster Final and have emerged as the main threat to the Dub’s drive for five.

“Outside of Dublin we’re all looking for someone to show some kind of ability that this might not be a foregone conclusion and I think Donegal showed enough yesterday to keep us interested.

“Their decision making yesterday was really, really high and I think any team that’s even going to get close to Dublin, their lack of errors has to be exceptionally high,” McGinley said.

While the Donegal team that won the 2012 All-Ireland Championship were successful largely because of their defensive ability, McGinley was impressed with the attacking display from Donegal.

“Their forward threat is immense. Their forward threat is the closest that I’ve seen to Dublin in that you’ve any number - five six, seven players, all highly accurate and all more than happy to take shots on, and good shot options.

“Their link-up play, their ability to go at teams, their ruthlessness have all increased,” McGinley commented.

McGinley praised the Donegal management’s decision to bring in former Mayo manager Stephen Rochford, a move which he said is already proving dividends.

“That’s a huge statement to the players that this isn’t about any one individual,” McGinley said of Rochford’s inclusion to the backroom team.

“This is about [if there is] any one bit that can make us better, we’re going to do it. Whether some of us need to take a bit a bit of a backwards step or lose a bit of profile, well that’s all for the good of the team, that’s nothing.

“For the manager to do that sends out a huge impetus. Rochford I’m sure is loving working with the attacking talent up in Donegal which you could maybe argue he missed a wee bit with Mayo,” McGinley commented.

Donegal’s win on Sunday saw them through to the Super 8s and will join Kerry in Group 1. While they could still end up with the likes of Tyrone and Mayo in their group, they ensured that they will face Dublin in the semi-finals at the earliest.
