Offaly football manager Emmet McDonnell has resigned following the county’s All-Ireland SFC qualifier round 1 defeat to Wicklow on Saturday.
McDonnell took charge of The Faithful County before the start of the 2013 campaign and guided them to promotion to Division 3 in the first year. Those good fortunes did not continue into 2014 as Offaly failed to win a single game in this year’s league campaign. The championship began with a defeat to Longford last month.
A statement from the county board said: "Emmet McDonnell has informed Offaly County Board that he is stepping down as Offaly Manager after been in charge for the last two years.
"While in charge, Emmet showed great loyalty, commitment and 100% dedication to the long term future of Offaly football.
"He worked tireously and left no stone unturned in his quest to return Offaly football to the top table, but sadly his time in charge was not very fruitful."
"Offaly County Board wishes to sincerely thank Emmet and his management team (Gordon McDonnell, Paul Mollen and Ronan Heavey) and all the members of his backroom team for their work and would like to wish Emmet and his team the very best for the future."
