Mayo captured their fifth successive Connacht senior football championship in a dominating performance against Sligo in Dr Hyde Park this afternoon. Aidan O' Shea was in devastating form on the edge of the square as he led Mayo to a 6-25 to 2-11 victory contributing 3-04.
Sadly this game was over after seven minutes as Mayo blitzed Sligo in the opening minutes scoring 2-3 without reply Cillian O'Connor and Seamus O' Shea with the goals. Instantly Sligo heads went down and there was no way back. Sligo didn't open their account until 10 minutes into the half but at that stage Mayo had opened up a 10 point gap.
There was a brief period where Mayo eased off but that didn't last long as Aidan O'Shea got his first goal of the game and Sligo soon replied with a goal of their own but it was merely consolation as whatever Sligo can do Aiden can do better as he scored from the resulting kick-out. Half time arrived and Mayo lead by 12.
The second half wasn't much better for Sligo as O'Shea completed his hat-trick and Keegan set a record for goals scored in a Connacht final as he scored their sixth.
The game finished off as shooting practice for Mayo as they scored a further seven points in the closing minutes to total a massive scoreline of 6-25 totaling an amazing 45 points.
Tyrone wait for Sligo in the qualifiers where Niall Carew's men will need to pick themselves up quickly. Mayo meanwhile march on to the quarter finals where they will hope to push and claim that elusive All Ireland.
