'We were never forgiven for the two losses in 1994 and 1996'

This Sunday, Off The Ball is live at Semple Stadium for the All Ireland quarter final meeting of Limerick and Wexford. We will be there with a commentary team of Dave McIntyre, Jamesie O’Connor and Diarmuid Lyng and are on air from 1pm.

It got us thinking about the meeting of the two sides in the 1996 All Ireland final when Wexford ended a 28 year wait for Liam McCarthy against one of the great Limerick teams who lost their second All Ireland final in three years.

We were joined on the line by then-Limerick manager Tom Ryan and former Wexford corner forward Larry Murphy to look back at that match.

"On the day we didn't function to our best ability," Ryan admitted, citing the 1994 final defeat as another disappointment for Limerick.

"We were, in actual fact, never forgiven for the two losses in 1994 and 1996."

Emotions were a pure contrast in Wexford given the long wait for silverware.

"Obviously winning the Leinster final [was special] because we hadn't won anything in 19 years and because nobody on the team had ever won a medal," said Murphy, describing the Leinster final win over Offaly as "magic".

"I don't think the All Ireland final will go down as one of those classics but still we were down to 13 early in the match and I think we were one of the few teams that never gave away a free in the second half. Our discipline probably got us through on the day."

But Ryan felt the decision to disallow a Limerick goal by Brian Tobin was poor and also felt the Limerick team of that era was dismantled before their sell by date.
