Kilkenny will have to be wary of the Waterford system - Michael Kavanagh

Waterford's defensively resolute system is one of the things Kilkenny will have to unlock as they bid for an All-Ireland final place.

And Kilkenny's former corner-back Michael Kavanagh says manager Brian Cody will have to take opposite number Derek McGrath's plans into account when formulating his own tactics for today's semi-final.

"It's definitely different for any team. Any team that has come up against Waterford have found them hard all year to break them down. Kilkenny have probably got the opportunity, like Tipperary, to sit back back and watch the system in operation and look at the videos," Kavanagh told Off The Ball.

"In fairness to Derek McGrath, as you see the last day, he's made a couple of tweaks to his game-plan the last day.

"Kilkenny wouldn't come across it too much. Going back 10 years, Clare would have tried something similar with seven defenders and Kilkenny have just had to react and Brian [Cody] will have to set up accordingly. It's probably not Kilkenny's way but he'll just have to go about it and be careful."
