Kerry want the GAA to cut ties with Sky Sports next year

The county are hoping that the GAA will make sure the games return to a free-to-air platform.

Next year's GAA Annual Convention will feature a motion from Kerry that will push for the association to end their contract with Sky Sports once it finishes at the end of the 2016 season.

The motion was passed by the Kerry County Board on Monday night, and speaking to RTÉ afterwards, chairman Patrick O'Sullivan said: "You have to see how people in some parts of the country look at this. On the western seaboard it’s very different to Dublin, where the economic upturn has been a lot faster. The decision to deal with Sky was taken when money was continuing to get a lot tighter for people".

The deal has opened up the GAA to a new market as people discover both hurling and football for the first time, but while there was great interest at first, it seems that the viewing figures are not trending in the right direction, which may affect the negotiations between the two parties this time around.

As a county, Kerry's finances are solid thanks to their own global brand, as the team has gotten plenty of support from ex-pats around the globe, but the GAA as a whole may be looking to continue to grow the sport abroad, which would more than likely include a continued partnership with Sky.

The motion itself puts forward that "at the conclusion of the current TV broadcast rights contract, that all televised games be available on free to air TV", and there will undoubtedly be a heated debate about it as the deal nears its conclusion.
