Jim Gavin addresses 'regrettable incident' which left Davey Byrne with severe injuries

On Tuesday, Dublin footballer Davey Byrne was released from hospital after suffering serious facial injuries in an altercation during a challenge match against Armagh.

The Ballymun Kickhams club man had been kept in hospital for two nights due to the severity of his injuries but the GAA are reportedly not investigating the incident, the details of which are not entirely clear.

Off The Ball's Colm 'Wooly' Parkinson was at Dublin's press conference ahead of the clash against Westmeath and he asked manager Jim Gavin about the incident involving an Armagh opponent and Byrne, as well as the ensuing fallout.

"Subsequent to the game, both players have spoken to each other and they regret what happened," Gavin confirmed.

"They regret what happened, they've had a frank discussion with each other and both of them are keen on getting back into their county jerseys."

Describing it as a "regrettable incident that shouldn't have happened", Gavin said the Dublin county board had spoken to Byrne about the incident and given him full support.

He also confirmed that the challenge match was videoed but said he did not know if that footage would be sent to the GAA to look into. He also said that he did not speak to the referee after the match about the incident.
