'We need to change something about the game'

Jarlath Burns, the Chairman of the GAA’s standing rules committee, feels amending the rules to encourage less ultra-defensive play in Gaelic football will be very complex.

The issue of blanket defences has become even more prevalent now, following recent matches, with the Dublin and Derry league game particularly under scrutiny.

But speaking to Off The Ball tonight, Burns said: "We have to be very careful how we change this, if at all we can."

However, he still feels something should be done.  

"We need to change something about the game to get it back to the way it used to be and there were plenty of bad games before these tactics came into play. I think the difference is now that teams are an awful lot fitter and an awful lot more tactically aware. Individual players are an awful lot more skillful but are not given an opportunity to showcase that. But I would always say, as an association it's our duty to have a game where the most skillful team is going to be a better team to watch and possibly win the match."

However, he also feels that any changes could also be vulnerable to new tactics from managers trying to "thwart" new rules.

Burns does not blame Derry manager Brian McIver for lining out his team in the way he did. But on Saturday night as he watched the game, he had major reservations about the future of the game:
