Jamie Wall treating recovery like "a big, horrible training camp"

“You couldn’t really get much further away from kind of two opposite ends of the spectrum” is how Jamie Wall described one critical week in his life in the summer of last year on Off the Ball tonight.

Days after winning a Munster Intermediate football title with Cork last July, the young GAA star’s legs stopped working. A rare bacterial infection had made its way to Wall’s spine and suddenly he was wheelchair bound. He’s still not suite sure what happened, however.

“I had an infection on my arm alright and it was the same bacterial infection but, in terms of how it got to my spine or how it even got to my arm in the first place, that’s kind of a mystery. It could’ve been anything” he said in an interview with Ger Gilroy this evening.

“It’s just kind of a freak occurrence, really.”

Jamie Wall is still recovering in a wheelchair in the NationalRehabilitationHospital in Dun Laoighaire, on a programme that will conclude in December. He compared the recovery challenge to a sporting one in his interview this evening.

“There is that kinda hard grind before you get anything, sort of, glamorous, like, so that’s the way I’m treating this place here at the moment; it’s just like a big, horrible training camp” he explained.
