James O'Donoghue: "I'd love it if there was a longer season and more games"

It's only just over a year since Kerry star James O'Donoghue won the All-Ireland championship for the first time, but for his club Killarney Legion, the wait for a county championship runs back all the way to 1946.

And after this year's All-Ireland final disappointment with Kerry, O'Donoghue has found some salvation in getting straight back into club action with a Killarney Legion side into the latter stags of their own championship.

"The club players don't care that you've lost an All-Ireland. It's just not part of their season. They're completely focused on county championships and to just get back into a new focus is hugely important. It completely took my mind off the disappointment of the All-Ireland," O'Donoghue told Off The Ball tonight.

He also spoke about the shoulder injury which cropped up during the championship and says he "does not want to go down the surgery route" at present with club commitments, but expects a decision to be made in the next few weeks.

"If Kerry had won the All-Ireland, there would be no questions about my shoulders," he added.

O'Donoghue also said that his "personal performance wasn't great" in last month's All-Ireland final defeat to Dublin, admitting that his "handling was off" in the wet conditions.

He also revealed that he wished that there were more games that he could have played in this year.

"I've only played eight matches in 12 months which is too low," he said as he summed up his own season.

"I'd love it if there was a longer season and more games but the way things fell and the timing, I didn't get to play too many games, so if I'm looking back over my season, I'm looking at a small snippet of games, a small collection where a lot of things didn't go great, so I'd have to say disappointment is generally it."
