James Horan spills the beans about the day his Mayo got their back on Donegal

Two years ago this week, former Mayo manager James Horan successfully led his side on a revenge mission against Donegal in the All-Ireland quarter-finals, beating Jim McGuinness' side 4-17 to 1-10 to avenge a final defeat the previous September.

As the two sides meet again in a quarter-final, James looked back on that experience on Off The Ball.

From our side of things, obviously the year before we had been a little bit hurt and that can sometimes be a strong motivation.

But I think we were just going well, we were building, the timing was good and had players in form.

We just hit Croke Park that day and had a high level of performance from an awful lot of the team that day.

We just started well and kept going throughout the game.

It was a great game for us - obviously disappointing for Donegal - and I've seen a lot of their players reference it during the week about how they were taught a lesson that day.

It was just a day that worked well for us.

Obviously, the year before we got to the All-Ireland final but didn't get the start we wanted, but still had a chance throughout the game. But we didn't play to the level of our capability and Donegal were deserved winners that day.

So I think both teams have learned from each other quite a bit and learned hard lessons. That adds a little bit more spice to today's game.

James was speaking on Off The Ball. We'll have live coverage of the quarter-final between Monaghan and Tyrone.
