Pat Holmes and Noel Connelly's reign at Mayo co-managers may fail to enter a second season.
The Connaught Telegraph have reported this morning that the tenure of Holmes and Connelly is in a perilous state after a vote of no-confidence by the players in the management team. Mike Finnerty who is the sports editor with the paper and GAA Commentator on Sky Sports spoke to Oisin Langan on Newstalk Breakfast this morning about the news.
Finnerty told Oisin that there were rumours of discontent in the squad since the semi final replay defeat to Dublin and confirmed that the squad met on the All Ireland Final weekend to discuss the year that passed. "The majority of the playing squad voted that they had no confidence in the Mayo joint management set up".
Two player representatives met Holmes and Connelly last weekend in Castlebar to relay the new to the co-managers. According to Finnerty, the vote was "a significant majority" against the duo.
Despite failing to reach the All Ireland Final, Mayo secured their fifth Connacht title in a row and first under the new management set up after easily defeating Sligo in Dr. Hyde Park.
As it stand, Holmes and Connelly remain in charge of the Connacht champions, but it looks very difficult for the two men to continue in their roles after such a loss of trust from the players.
