Yesterday the GAA Minor Review Workgroup report was published with key recommendations for changes at certain age grades, especially when it comes to eligibility.
Tonight, the report's author Micheal Martin joined us on Off The Ball to discuss the key recommendations from the report which aims to deal with the issue of player burnout.
"Our key recommendation is that a player to play in adult competitions at over-21 will have to be over 17, so that's moving the age grade up one year," said Martin.
"There are also some recommendations on eligibility. If a player, for example is playing in the latter stages of post-primary competitions, that the post-primary school would have first call on it. At the moment, we have a situation where someone might be playing in a provincial colleges final but also in demand for their counties. So what we're saying is that he's not eligible to play for the county while still playing with the college. He would be eligible to play with the club but that the county setup would not require that player."
Martin also said that they have sought to move the All-Ireland Colleges final forward to the end of March and spoke about other proposed changes to the calendar at underage, while he also spoke about the pressure placed on elite young players.
