'I dont think there is any drug abuse or substance abuse in gaelic games'

It was revealed in yesterday's Sunday Independent that a footballer from Monaghan failed an out of competition drugs test.

Since the GAA began drug testing, this is only the second failed test by a player.

Kerry footballer Aidan O'Mahony failed a drugs test in 2008, but the results were overturned when the banned substance was part of O'Mahony's asthma enhaler.

The footballer in question is currently not part of the Monaghan squad, but was part of an extended set up earlier this season.

Former Armagh footballer and current Motiv8 Performance Managing Director Enda McNulty spoke to Ivan Yates this morning about the news and whether the GAA may have a drug problem on its hands.

Last night the Gaelic Players Association released a statement about the situation:

"The GPA is currently advising a GAA player who has had an adverse finding as a result of an out-of-competition drug test in February of this year. The player in question is a trial panellist and whilst he is not a member of the GPA, the Association is nonetheless providing him with personal and professional support.

As the process before the GAA Anti-Doping Hearings Committee is ongoing the GPA will be making no further comment on the matter until the Hearings Committee has concluded its deliberations. The GPA is committed to supporting the Anti-Doping protocols."
