AUDIO: Hurling 2020 on a collision course with the GAA over refereeing

Hurling 2020’s proposal of a separate refereeing body for the small ball game puts them on a collision course with the GAA’s Central Council, according to John Fogarty of the Irish Examiner.

The review committee will unveil its recommendations today with several subject matters - and refereeing in particular - sure to spark robust debate.

“[A separate refereeing body] has been touted for a while, especially from the traditional hurling counties,” Fogarty told Newstalk’s Oisin Langan this morning. “They would have felt their voice wasn't been heard.

“There would be a lot of opposition to this at Central level. The way they feel is that there’s absolutely no problem with one body marshalling both games. They feel there’s no issue here ... ‘just move on’.”

Fogarty also says he “wouldn't be surprised if the black card comes into hurling”.
