James Horan: 'Jason Ryan needs to be courageous against the Dubs'

James Horan reckons Kildare need to offer up a bold approach when they tackle the challenge of Dublin in this weekend's Leinster championship semi-final at Croke Park.

The former Mayo manager joined us on Off The Ball as always on a Thursday to preview and analyse another busy weekend of fixtures in the provincial football championships and qualifiers.

On Kildare, Horan believes a conservative approach could be counter-productive against the Dubs.

"The worst thing they can do is sit back and brace and wait for impact, or wait for the dam to break down. If they do that, they're absolutely dust before the ball is kicked," he said, adding that the Lilywhites' mobility can be used as an asset.

"They need to go in and be defensively strong and have one or two guys ready who know their roles, but when they get the ball that they really commit to it and go at Dublin - not just try and play around and try and keep numbers back. They need to go at Dublin and try and rattle them up front and try and rattle them early, otherwise that wave will eventually come and wash all before it."

He also added that Kildare boss "Jason Ryan needs to be courageous in this game" but also admitted that he will also need to be sensible with any attacking approach.

Horan also gave his take on how Dublin deal with the favourites tag and how they cope with the relative lack of a challenge provincially when the tougher games come around in late summer.
