He's more affectionately known as 'Effin Eddie,' and within a few seconds of hearing him speak, you can understand where the nickname derives from.
Eddie Moroney was drafted in to commentate on the U21 Tipperary club football final 23 years ago today. The Sunday Independent reports that he spent the previous night indulging in the consumption of alcohol and despite not feeling the may west in the morning, the football fanatic still agreed to fulfil his obligations and attend the game.
The game featured his home club Aherlow and Nenagh Éire Óg and 'Effin Eddie' provided the kind of colourful vernacular that only local GAA commentary can provide.
Between showing blatant disregard to the notion of remaining neutral in his role, and hurling a relentless barrage of abuse at the referee, 'Effin Eddie' became an instant sensation among the crowd. The memory of his feat survived only in the minds of those who witnessed his commentary for so long and it was a little under a decade ago before Youtube was bedecked in some considerably raw footage of Eddie Moroney's entertaining display.
