Gary Brennan brings the curtain down on Clare football career

Gary Brennan has confirmed his retirement from inter-county football.

The midfielder had been one of the first names on the Clare team sheet for the past thirteen years.

Brennan made his Banner debut in 2007 under then manager Páidí Ó Sé.

The Clondegad clubman had the honour of captaining his county to promotion from Division 4 to Division 2 of the Allianz Football League.

2016 will undoubtedly go down as Brennan's most successful year in a Clare jersey.

They were promoted from Division 3, having finished second behind Kildare.

That summer - following a Munster semi-final defeat to Kerry - Clare would go on to beat Laois and Sligo in the qualifiers before eventually succumbing to the Kingdom once more in the All Ireland quarter-finals.

Brennan would see his efforts rewarded with an All Star nomination that autumn.

He also got to represent his country in both the 2015 and 2017 International Rules series.

It was believed that he would step away from the Clare team in 2020 due to travel plans. However, the delayed start of the Championship meant he would appear one last time in November's Munster quarter-final loss to Tipperary. Brennan scored a solitary point that evening.

He confirmed his Clare retirement to the Clare Echo.

Brennan will continue to play on with both Ballyea and Condegad.

Meanwhile, Colm Collins is to remain in charge of the Clare footballers for an eighth year.

With the Allianz League season set to be pushed back until late March, Collins says he had to think "long and hard" about returning.

He told the Clare Champion, "We had a tough year last year and we’re facing a tough year to come this year as well. That’s a fact. Sure listen, that’s the way it is and its out of our control really isn’t it."
