Galway County Board chairman states player revolt came as a shock

Galway County Board chairman Noel Treacy has stated that he believed there were no signs of discontent in the camp, and had received a positive report on the year from representatives shortly after manager Anthony Cunningham had been reinstated.

Speaking at the annual convention on Monday night, Treacy stated that the discontent and player revolt had come as a complete shock to him, given that he'd met with players representatives shortly after the reappointment of Cunningham.

He said that no issues had been raised with the officials at that meeting, and that the players had given county secretary John Hynes positive feedback on the year in early October.

He added that there was a sense of shock "when two other players gave a totally different story later that day".

However, those claims were refuted when Michael Flanagan, the delegate from Leitrim-Kilnadeema, said that "every dog in the street" knew of problems behind the scenes.

Hynes claimed that his meeting with the players had not brought forward any problems, saying "there was no other issue raised. They stood up shook my hand, were very happy with the year and walked out the door.

"I went home was doing the last winter cut of the lawn when I got the call to say there was a serious problem – that was the 3rd of October".

There are currently six names in the frame to replace Cunningham as manager, bur reports suggest that early favourite John Hardiman imay decide to withdraw from the contest.
