Tributes have begun to pour in in the wake of the tragic death of former Derry footballer Aaron Devlin.
The 23-year-old was admitted to hospital after playing 40 minutes for his Ballinderry club, before coming off citing tiredness as the issue.
He was admitted to hospital when his condition worsened and was placed in intensive care after it was discovered he had contracted meningitis.
In a statement, the Derry County Board said: "The Derry GAA community is greatly saddened to learn of the untimely death of Aaron Devlin. It is difficult to comprehend the devastation that the Devlin family and the wider community of Ballinderry must be feeling at this time.
“People throughout Ulster and Ireland will remember Aaron wearing either the Ballinderry or Derry jersey as he graced each field with his youth, talent and skill. That is how he should always be remembered; as a talented player who proudly represented and loved the GAA though his involvement at Club, Community and County level.”
The GPA added: "On behalf of the county playing body, the Gaelic Players Association would like to express its sincere condolences to the family, friends and everyone connected to Derry and Ballinderry footballer Aaron Devlin who passed away today.
"Aaron was a talented representative for his club, county and college and his loss will leave a terrible void in many lives. During his career he was also an active member of the GPA and contributed to the Association's work this year."
But it was one simple message from former Ballinderry manager, Adrian McGuckin, that will resonate in the heart of those close to him.
The final whistle has blown for you @Aaron_Devlin but by God you had some game. Rest in Peace Aaron.
