Ex-Cork women's manager Fitzgerald named Waterford football boss

Ephie Fitzgerald has been confirmed as the new Waterford senior football manager.

The former Cork women's football manager takes over from Shane Ronayne, who left the Waterford job to take the reins with the Rebelletes earlier this month.

Fitzgerald quit Cork earlier this year following their All Ireland semi-final defeat to Meath. He had been in charge for six years, and led the team to an All Ireland title in 2016.

Prior to that, the former corner-forward guided Nemo Rangers to two Munster club titles in three years (2005, 2007) and three county titles. Fitzgerald was also in charge of Ballylanders when they were crowned Limerick champions in 2014.

"Waterford GAA are delighted to announce that at a meeting of the Management Committee tonight Ephie Fitzgerald was unanimously recommended for ratification as the new County Senior Football Manager on a two-year term," a statement read.

Waterford remain in Division 4 of the Allianz Football League, following defeat to Antrim in June's finals. The Déise lost 4-18 to 0-12 to Limerick in this year's Munster football quarter-finals.
