Doubt cast over Davy Fitzgerald's Clare future amid reports of player unrest

Davy Fitzgerald's future as Clare hurling manager appears to be in doubt with claims that some members of the panel are seeking a change of management.

The Clare People reports that some members of the current inter-county panel "have indicated privately that they would like to see a change of manager for 2017".

In 2014, he was given a three-year term in charge of Clare which is due to expire next year.

The 45-year-old has been in charge of his native county since 2011.

Fitzgerald led Clare to All-Ireland glory in 2013 but the past three years have been less successful, although the Banner won the National Hurling League in 2016.

They exited this year's championship at the quarter-final stage after a 2-17 to 0-17 loss to Galway.

In 2015, they were knocked out by Cork in Round 2 of the qualifiers.

Speaking to Off The Ball in the lead-up to this year's match against Galway, he had given his take on media criticism.

"Local media, especially with us, is horrendous. It's something I wouldn't be happy about. Like, we're not a county that has won a rake of All-Irelands and to think that because you've won two or three under-21s that naturally that gives you a God given right, that we should be winning All-Irelands every year...it's hard to beat the Galways, the Kilkennys, the Tipps, Waterfords and the Limericks without getting pressure from your own crowd all the time," he said at the time.
