Donie Buckley to provide major boost to Monaghan

Monaghan football has received a major boost with confirmation that Donie Buckley will join their backroom team for next year.

The former Kerry and Mayo coach will link up with Séamus McEnaney in 2021 as they get their season underway with Allianz National Football League games against Donegal, Armagh and Tyrone.

Buckley was involved with the Kerry panel in 2019 when they brought Dublin to a replay in the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship final.

He was removed from their ticket though by manager Peter Keane earlier this year, a decision that confused many.

Reasons behind the move were not disclosed at the time and it's believed players were unhappy to see Buckley go.

Buckley also spent six years with Mayo, where he worked under three different managers and lost three All-Ireland finals to Dublin by just a point.

Banty has also appointed Jonny Davis as their new strength and conditioning coach.

Davis was previously head of athletic performance with Ulster rugby for nine years.

The news will be welcomed by Monaghan fans who were left frustrated this year after they were knocked out in the first round of the Ulster Championship after extra-time by Cavan.

They also lost to Cavan in the first round of the 2019 provincial competition and then lost to Armagh in the second round of the qualifiers.

They also just avoided relegation from Division One of the Allianz National Football League, staying up after finishing just a point above Mayo.

Last week, Kieran Donaghy joined Armagh's set up with manager Kieran McGeeney.
