Donegal's Paddy McGrath facing lengthy spell out with ACL injury

Donegal defender Paddy McGrath has had his year ended by an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

The Ardara corner-back sustained the injury during last weekend's defeat to Mayo at MacHale Park in Castlebar.

He's the second player to pick up a ligament injury from that Super-8 game, with Mayo forward Jason Doherty having his season ended by an ACL injury.

The Donegal Democrat say there were hopes McGrath had only suffered minor damage, but a scan reveals damage to his cruciate which could leave him sidelined for between nine and ten months.

McGrath sustained a torn posterior cruciate ligament and cartilage damage while playing for his club in 2017, but was able to return to action without surgery.

It's the latest blow to the 30-year old who - having only decided to stay on for another year - battled back from a calf injury that forced him to miss Mayo's opening pair of Super-8 games with Meath and Kerry.

Donegal have had woeful luck with injuries in recent weeks, with Eoghan Bán Gallagher breaking his ankle in training prior to their game with Meath last month. Midfielder Jason McGee lasted only 10-minutes of the defeat to Mayo in Castlebar.
