"He used a few choice words and said 'Cody, if you think I'm coming off ...'"

As we build up to the All-Ireland hurling final, Off The Ball were down at Galway's Roisin Dubh with some hurling legends in tow.

To kick off the show, Killkenny legend DJ Carey, Offaly All-Ireland winner Michael Duignan and Clare great Jamesie O'Connor were first up on stage and all three had brilliant stories from hurling championships past.

"Every team had characters. Like the 2000 All-Ireland final, Willie O'Connor broke his ribs before the game. Obviously, no-one can tell if a fella's broken his ribs or not but he got a fair 'oul thump and he was on the bed getting injected and Brian Cody sent out for Sean Meally and Sean comes in and he said "Bun, you're going in for Willie' and Willie gets off the bed and he used a few choice words and basically said 'Cody, if you think I'm coming off ... take me off if you think I'm playing bad but if it's an injury, I'm not. And he was out of the dressing room before Cody had given the speech to go out against Offaly."

Duignan, whose Dad is from Galway, had a few stories of his own from an All-Ireland semi-final in 1998.

"My father is a Galwayman - he's a quiet man from Connemara and I get my talking from my mother who's from Tipp - but I got up that morning and I was fierce nervous and went to first Mass and came home. My father was reading the paper and my mother was making the big fry and maybe a steak - there were no dieticians that time - and we were having a mighty feed. I was pushing it around because I was fierce nervous. I went out the back and came back in and my father was reading the paper. He dropped it down and he says 'What's wrong with you?' And I say, 'I'm shocking nervous, my old stomach and that you know'. He said 'If I were you I'd eat up. There's no point being out in the middle of Croke Park making a fool of yourself and being hungry as well'. As it turns out, he was right on both counts."

There is more to that story and more tales from the lads which you can listen to via the podcast.
