"We battered each other" | Enda McNulty resoundingly endorses Dessie Farrell's Dubs credentials

Handed the unenviable task of following Jim Gavin, Dessie Farrell is unlikely to receive as resounding an endorsement as that given by Enda McNulty on Friday's OTB AM.

At various points in their playing days, Dessie Farrell and Enda McNulty served as both teammates and opponents.

"The first time I ever encountered him was on a football pitch," recalled McNulty, "it was Dublin and Armagh in the National League.

"We battered each other, absolutely battered each other.

"At every stage of the game, Dessie's elbow was up in my jaw - and obviously I was a much cleaner player than Dessie.

"But I'll never forget after the game he gave me a big hug, a handshake and he stood talking to me on the pitch after the game."

I'm absolutely delighted for Dessie, I'm delighted for Na Fianna, I'm delighted for his family and yes, I'm delighted for the Dubs

A powerful figure who is well-positioned to assume control of such an important role in Dublin football according to McNulty, he couldn't hold back his joy at the news that Farrell was set to replace Jim Gavin.

"I'm absolutely delighted for Dessie, I'm delighted for Na Fianna, I'm delighted for his family and yes, I'm delighted for the Dubs," he insisted.

"What are they getting? First of all, they're getting a true leader. They're getting a guy who is a natural team player, a guy who will do all in his power to give his best to the players and to the next generation.

"He's an honest guy, there is no bullshit about Dessie. He's fun, knows how to find balance and have fun at night with a few bottles of beer.

"They're getting a really strong role model."

Despite the massive expectations that will ultimately rest on Dessie Farrell's shoulders as he looks to lead Dublin on to the six-in-a-row, Enda McNulty is of the opinion that he possesses the necessary characteristics to deal with the pressure and thrive.
