Davy Fitzgerald looks set to become Wexford's new manager

Davy Fitzgerald looks set to be ratified as the new manager of Wexford on Friday evening.

Newstalk Sport understands that Fitzgerald is interested in the position, having previously worked in the south-east with Waterford.

First reported by the Wexford Echo, Fitzgerald looks set to return to inter-county management after leaving the Clare post last month. Having being appointed in October 2011, Fitzgerald won one All-Ireland title and one National League with his native county.

Fitzgerald's first inter-county job, saw the former goalkeeper lead Waterford to an All-Ireland Final in 2008, and a Munster title in 2010.

Last season, Liam Dunne led Wexford to the All-Ireland quarter-finals. 2016 was the final year in Dunne's initial five-year term, and the Oulart-The Balagh clubman looks set to lose the job to Fitzgerald.

Fitzgerald managed Clare to All-Ireland glory in 2013

If the 45-year-old is to take the Wexford job, it will be his first time working in the Leinster Championship, where he will be pitted against the likes of Kilkenny, Dublin and Galway.

Wexford last won the Leinster Championship in 2004, and last played in a final four years later. The Wexford County Board hope that Fitzgerald will be able to change that.
