Davy Fitzgerald handed eight-week ban

Wexford manager Davy Fitzgerald has been handed an eight-week ban for his behaviour in last Sunday's Allianz League semi-final against Tipperary.

The Clare native took to the field in Nowlan Park and clashed with Tipperary's Jason Forde in the first half of their 11 point defeat.

Fitzgerald's ban means he will not be on the sidelines for Wexford's Leinster Championship opener against either Kerry, Laois, Meath or Westmeath in late May. He will also miss a potential semi-final against Kilkenny on June 10th. The ban will conclude hours a possible clash with Brian Cody's side in Wexford Park.

The Wexford manager has been widely slammed for his actions, with former All-Ireland winner Daithi Regan telling Off the Ball, Fitzgerald's decision to enter the field was "imbecilic, childish carry-on that was self-indulgent".

Former Clare captain Jamesie O'Connor added that Fitzgerald's behaviour could impact the team this summer, after an impressive league campaign where they earned promotion to Division 1A.

"I'd feel very disappointed for Wexford and the Wexford players if they go with the severe sanction and it affects their Championship preparations", O'Connor said earlier this week.

The GAA have yet to confirm the specifics of Fitzgerald's ban, and whether he will be allowed train the team during the eight-week period.
