'A manager would tell you to absolutely take him down'

Daithi Regan is not convinced that the proposal to enforce substitutions in hurling for two yellow cards is workable.

The hurling analyst and former Offaly inter-county star said he "broadly welcomed" many of the Hurling 2020 proposals.

But on the proposal that two yellow cards leads to automatic substitution rather than the tradition of dismisall, Daithi believes that "in principle, it will be very difficult to police".

"I think it's very irregular that you will see a second yellow card being given to a hurler," said Daithi.

"Do I necessarily agree that with two yellows, someone should be substituted? Well, I think if you're a stronger panel and someone is bearing down on goals and you've got a yellow, I think a manager would have told you beforehand in circumstances like that to absolutely take him down."

John Fogarty of The Irish Examiner also told us that it was that very proposal that was causing most controversy so far and does not expect it to get through congress.

"The one that's caused the most consternation is the automatic substitution for the second yellow card. If the motion was to go through, it would mean that in a championship or league game, should a player pick up a second yellow, he wouldn't be red carded but replaced. Basically it's the equivalent of a black card. But in this situation you get two goes at it," he said.

He also added explained that the other point of disagreement is the proposal to create a separate hurling referee committee at national level.
